Did you know? There is a Pokemon MMO now! ...it's World of Warcraft!
I've off and on played WoW for several years. I never really played it too seriously... in fact, my favorite thing to do was to collect the little pets. When I got all the pets I typically stopped playing much until new content patches brought new pets. Pets where previously just for looks but now you can battle and catch them much like Pokemon in the new expansion!
This is me fighting a sheep. I've got my little demon guy who I've named Belphegor, my green spider named Fever and my ghost dragon thing named Spirit. Spirit replaced my old bird named Cpt. Rainbows because Cpt. Rainbows wasn't very good... but neither is Spirit, really. I set out on a fantastic Pokemon journey... it is slightly upsetting that Professor Oak wasn't there.
It works a lot like Pokemon in a limited fashion. There aren't IVs and EVs and breeding and stuff... but pets have 4 qualities from poor to rare that determine their potential in stats. Since there is no breeding, you just have to get lucky and catch the better qualities. You get three move slots which can have one of two moves each... many of the moves seem to be directly inspired by Pokemon (Leech Seed is in the game... and it does the exact same thing as it does in Pokemon.)
There is something like 250 wild pets to catch and as of now I've pretty much put aside doing anything but Pokemon because it's so much fun. Almost every zone in the game has unique pets, some of which are rare and/or only come out during certain times of the day or different types of weather. There are also trainers to fight who luckily don't confront you every time you make eye contact. You can, of course, battle other players in Pokemon battles.
With how fun this turned out to be, and basically proving it possible, Nintendo should just make a legit Pokemon MMO.
